Knebworth lies on the old Great North Road, between Stevenage and the village of Woolmer Green. Knebworth is mentioned in the Domesday Book, where it is called Chenepeworde which means 'farm belonging to Cnebba the Dane'. Nearby, Knebworth Park is home to Knebworth House and to St Mary's Parish Church, parts of which date back to 1120. The village expanded in the late 19th century, mainly due to the arrival of the railway in 1884.
Most of the property in Knebworth was built in the 20th century although there are a few Edwardian and Victorian houses and cottages, especially in the neighbouring villages and in Old Knebworth.
