In 909 AD, King Edward the Elder conferred the manor of Whitchurch on the monks of Winchester, after years of pillage by the Vikings. Much of Whitchurch is a conservation area and contains many listed buildings including Bere Mill, built in the 18th century for the paper industry; and Silk Mill, a working mill built in 1800.
