In 909 AD, King Edward the Elder conferred the manor of Whitchurch on the monks of Winchester, after years of pillage by the Vikings. Much of Whitchurch is a conservation area and contains many listed buildings including Bere Mill, built in the 18th century for the paper industry; and Silk Mill, a working mill built in 1800. The White Hart is a 15th century coaching inn and All Hallows church, built in the 9th century, is across the meadow from an old Tythe Barn.
