Drive into Stockbridge on the A30 and you will be struck by the wide main street with its backdrop of beautiful green hills. Stockbridge crosses the River Test and, since the building of the A303, the village suffers little through traffic. Stockbridge was given the right to hold a weekly market in 1190 and the market continued until the 1930s. By the late 18th century, herds of cattle were driven through the town by drovers on their way to London or to supply ships in Portsmouth and Southampton.
