Southsea is a seaside resort on the southern tip of Portsea Island south of Portsmouth. Portsea Island is separated from the mainland by a narrow creek, bridged in places to make it look like a peninsula. Southsea came into prominence when Henry VIII built Southsea Castle, but it took until the 19th century for the building of streets and houses to begin. Thomas Ellis Owen, architect and builder, mixed many distinctive Regency and Italianate designs. Ornamental gardens were built, followed by Clarence Pier and South Parade Pier, confirming Southseas status as a popular Victorian resort. The majority of the remaining Victorian houses are now in conservation areas and are listed properties.
To give a guide as to the prices of houses for sale in Southsea, modest, Victorian terraced houses offering three bedrooms are from £160,000. More substantial terraced and semi-detached Victorian houses with four or five bedrooms are in the region of £230,000 - £280,000, climbing to £400,000 for six bedrooms in the most impressive, detached houses.
Flats for sale in Southsea are in a mix of purpose-built apartment houses and Victorian-house conversions. Estate agents in Southsea offer one bedroom flats from £100,000 and flats with two bedrooms from £115,000, increasing to £200,000 for the most prestigious apartments.
