Lechlade-on-Thames is about 11 miles east of Cirencester and 20 miles west of Oxford. A market town from the early 13th century, Lechlade did well from trading wool and later as a staging post. In the 17th century, cheese was shipped down the River Thames from Lechlade, and later coal when the Thames and Severn canal opened near the village of Inglesham. Today, Lechlade is about as far up the Thames narrow boats can go and it is possible to cruise all the way down the river to London.
