Historian G.M. Trevelyan described Chipping Campden High Street as: The most beautiful village street left on the island and it is no overstatement. The terraces of honey-coloured limestone date from the 14th17th centuries and were built from locally quarried Cotswold stone. A rich wool trading centre in the Middle Ages: Chipping means market and Campden is a Saxon word for fields. Market Hall, in the centre of Chipping Campden, was built in 1627 and its perfect arches are a fine example of the masons skills that are exemplified in the Church of St James, built in the 15th century; the vastly extravagant 17th century monuments to Sir Baptist Hicks; the exquisite terrace of Almshouses, and the Woolstaplers Hall.
