The earliest recorded use of the name, Hornchurch, was in 1222 in its Latin form Monasterium Cornutum, which means "church with horn-like gables". Until the arrival of the railway, Hornchurch was entirely rural but in the early 1900s huge estates were constructed such as Emerson Park. When the District line was electrified in the 1930s many more houses were built including the streets around Elm Park station. During the Second World War, Hornchurch Airfield was an important RAF station and home to a number of Spitfire squadrons. Today, it is a large housing development adjacent to Hornchurch Country Park, a vast natural park with woods, ponds, marshes and abundant wildlife.
