Robertsbridge was founded in 1176 when the Cistercian Abbey was built on the site of the current War Memorial. It is believed that the name of the village was derived from the bridge built by the first abbot, Robert de St Martin. Robertsbridge is considered to be one of the most haunted villages in the south-east of England but the ghosts haven't hurt house prices or the residents!
