Exotic Eastbourne offers seaside charm and the promise of long, sunny days.
Living in Eastbourne
Eastbourne is the largest town in East Sussex and is considered to be a good place to live. Its green spaces and seafront location makes for an amenable environment.
The town promotes itself as "The Sunshine Coast", and often claims the highest recorded hours of sunlight, producing a rivalry with the larger coastal resorts of Bournemouth and Weymouth.
Whether you are commuting to work or retiring from work, there is a wide variety of properties to suit all budgets.
Eastbourne has traditional seaside charm and some select pockets where new housing is sprouting up. Its best address is Meads, a smart, leafy, village-feel Victorian quarter close to Beachy Head.
There you will find substantial red brick town houses, private boarding schools, the Grand Hotel, Royal Eastbourne Golf Club and Devonshire Park, the venue for the pre-Wimbledon womens tennis tournament.
All Saints is a redevelopment of a listed Victorian hospital moments from the seafront. Three low-rise apartment blocks are being built inside the gated walls, and the original hospital buildings are being restored and converted into flats.
At the other end of the Eastbourne seafront is Sovereign Harbour, where several hundred homes have already been built, with more in the pipeline. The latest developments have bold modern architecture that fits well in the marina setting.
Transport
Eastbourne is easily accessible by road or rail and is close to Gatwick International Airport and cross channel ferry ports.
There are frequent rail services linking Eastbourne with Brighton, Lewes and Hastings and an hourly service linking Eastbourne with Ashford International and Eurostar services.
Trains from the North, the Midlands and the East can link to Eastbourne services, avoiding London by changing at Gatwick or Haywards Heath. The key approach to Eastbourne from London by road is the A22 (journey time 1.5 - 2 hours). Most local bus services in Eastbourne are operated by Eastbourne Buses. Services are run to all parts of Eastbourne and to nearby towns Hailsham, Lewes, Battle and Bexhill. Further information about transport can be found at www.eastbournebuses.co.uk and www.nationalrail.co.uk.
History and culture
Eastbourne became fashionable during Edwardian times when it was called 'The Watering Place of the South'.
Eastbourne acquired the Towner Art Gallery in 1924, which is now recognised as one of the countrys most interesting provincial galleries.
Many people come to enjoy the views from Beachy Head at 162m, the highest chalk sea cliff in Britain and to see the century-old red and white lighthouse at the foot of the cliffs.
Contemporary Eastbourne is a thriving holiday resort, with modern attractions which fit in well with the towns more traditional appeal.
For those who live and work in Eastbourne it is a thriving business centre, while conferences make an important contribution to the local economy.
