The Isle of Portland is 5 miles south of Weymouth and is connected to the mainland via the A354 road bridge. Portland is 4 miles long, 1.5 miles wide and enjoys a spectacular landscape and wildlife, especially birds. A central part of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site, the island's location is an important British Sea Area. Portland limestone is still quarried on the island and has been used extensively for fine British buildings and war memorials. England's National Sailing Academy is situated in Portland Harbour and will host all of the sailing events in the 2012 London Olympics.
The villages Fortuneswell, Chiswell and Castletown are to the north of the island and are built on steeply-sloping land called Underhill. The villages of Easton, Weston, Southwell, Wakeham and Grove are relatively flat, as they occupy the heights of the island, atop a giant slab of Portland limestone. The majority of houses are built out of Portland Stone, giving the island its unique colour and character. As a guide to property prices, houses for sale in Portland offering two or three bedrooms, in traditionally styled, terraced houses are from £165,000 and houses with four bedrooms are in the region of £250,000.
