The 'Casterbridge' of Thomas Hardy's novels, Dorchester is the county town of Dorset, with a history that can be traced back to the Iron Age Maiden Castle. Dorchester's traditional and historical centre is surrounded by typical rolling Dorset countryside. There is a good mixture of property for sale in Dorchester including the well known 'Poundbury Village' on the western fringe of town, which was designed for Prince Charles. There are traditional cottages, barn conversions, modern semi-detached family houses, retirement flats, as well as a selection of new houses in Dorchester which have been sympathetically built in a period style.

Amenities for properties in Dorchester

In Dorchester you'll find plenty of popular High Street names, individual shops and boutiques in a pedestrianised shopping area, along with welcoming inns, restaurants and tea shops. A large open-air market draws people into Dorchester from surrounding villages every Wednesday. Families with children of school age who are considering Dorchester property, will find renowned schools for pupils of all ages in the area. With the influx of people relocating from London, Essex, the Midlands and Home Counties, new shops and restaurants are starting to open, adding to the mix of modern and traditional in Dorset: you can do your food shopping in Marks & Spencer or Waitrose and relax afterwards in one of the town's new wine bars. There are many other facilities and amenities in the town, including a modern hospital, a cinema, skate parks for children and the Thomas Hardy Leisure Centre. Further leisure facilities are planned as Phase II of the Poundbury development takes shape, and key worker accommodation is being planned on the site of the Old Eldridge Pope Brewery, to include NHS staff, police and teachers.

By road the A35 runs close to Dorchester, providing a good east/west route.
