At the head of the Vale of the River Brit, Beaminster is on the A3066 between Crewkerne and Bridport. During the civil war the town declared for Parliament and was attacked by Royalists who set it ablaze. In 1684, Beaminster was severely damaged by fire again, which is why the finest 17th century houses are to be found on the edges of town. Another fire in 1781 caused considerable damage and, consequently, the centre of Beaminster was mostly built in the late 18th and 19th centuries.
