Yelverton is a small town on the south-west edge of Dartmoor, halfway between Plymouth and Tavistock. The construction of the railway line in the 19th century ensured Yelverton’s popularity with commuters to Plymouth. The line is now closed, although a mile-long section is run by Plym Valley Railway. During the Second World War, an airfield was constructed near Yelverton to defend Plymouth. Terraced Victorian houses in the village had their upper storey removed to provide an easier approach for aircraft.
