Derbyshire is situated to the north east of the Midlands in the UK. A large proportion of the county lies within the UK's first national park – the Peak District, which offers dramatic scenery, with high rocky crags rising from heather covered moorland, which is popular with walkers, potholers and climbers. The Derbyshire Dales are renowned for their beauty, lovely river valleys, and caves, which were worked by the Romans for lead – today some are still quarried for limestone. Derbyshire is famous for the production of Royal Crown Derby Porcelain in the busy industrial city of Derby. The county is also renowned for the production of Bakewell Pudding, and some of the most delicious chocolates - made by Thorntons of Derbyshire. Buxton Spring Water is produced in the spa town of Buxton, and is claimed to be one of the purest natural mineral waters in the world. For those of you who enjoy movie trivia, Derbyshire was the film location of the 2005 adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice, starring Keira Knightley.

A brief history

Evidence of Prehistoric existence has been found in the limestone caves at Cresswell Craggs, where there are also numerous Bronze Age burial arrows and stone circles. In the first and second centuries the Roman armies controlled the area, establishing a stronghold at what is now known as Little Chester. Two centuries later the Romans left, and the area came under the rule of the Saxons as part of their Kingdom of Mercia. The 18th century saw the rise of the Industrial Revolution and many renowned Derbyshire Industrialists, such as Arkwright, emerged. They created a turning point from what was until then a largely rural economy, to the development of townships based on factory production methods. Mining has long been part of Derbyshire life over the years. Derbyshire was formerly known as Northworthy, and was renamed Deoraby by the Danes because of the concentration of deer. Derby therefore means deer village, or village with a deer park or enclosure.
