Founded in 1947, Newton Aycliffe has a population of 25,000 and is the oldest "new town" in the north of England. Originally a Saxon settlement called Acley, which means 'a clearing in oak woods', the remote, mist-shrouded marshy land was an ideal cover during the Second World War for the manufacture of munitions. Most of the factories were staffed by women who were known as 'Aycliffe Angels' and they faced grave dangers everyday. Following the war, the factories were replaced by manufacturing units that became the industrial district of Aycliffe.
