Congleton is a small market town 6 miles east of Junctions 17 & 18 of the M6. It lies on the banks of the River Dane, to the west of the Macclesfield Canal. Originally a Roman settlement, Congleton gained its charter to hold fairs and markets in 1272 and later became an important centre for the production of textiles and leather gloves. Today, Congleton has a population of 23,000 and its principal industries include the manufacture of airbags and golf-balls.
