Living in Cheshire

Cheshire is a pleasant and much sought after place to live and, with its country estates, modern houses and wealthy business community, has never been more fashionable.

Cheshire boasts some of the country’s most delightful countryside and idyllic villages in which to live, yet is close to the North West’s two great cities of Manchester and Liverpool.

It is said that more millionaires live in the county than in any other in the United Kingdom, and it is well known for being home to footballers and their wives/girlfriends.

In smart enclaves such as Wilmslow, Hale and Prestbury a shortage of stock is keeping the market hungry.

These established residential areas in attractive surroundings exhibit strong population growth, have outstanding local education, good proximity to airports and motorways, fast rail links to London and decent shops.

While it may revel in its reputation as the Champagne capital of Britain, Alderley Edge enjoys a charming village atmosphere. Between the restaurants and bars, there are traditional bakers, butchers and the monthly Farmers' Market.

Chester, the county town of Cheshire is often regarded as Britain's most outstanding "black and white" city, on account of the large number of half-timbered medieval buildings which survive in its centre.

Chester has a buoyant housing market with a substantial amount of new building in progress. It continues to be a hot-spot for developers, with the main focus on the regeneration of derelict inner city sites.

If Cheshire's out of your price bracket, take a look at Stoke-on-Trent in neighbouring Staffordshire, with some of the cheapest properties in the country. Not for long though, with optimistic estate agents already calling Stoke "Cheshire borders".

Macclesfield is famed for its canal; constructed in 1826, it is one of the last narrow canals to be built. The route of the canal was surveyed by Thomas Telford, and construction was engineered by William Crosley.

Today the canal is used for leisure purposes, and is part of the Cheshire Ring, which is a popular cruising circuit.

Chester has the UK's biggest zoo, with over 5,000 animals living in spacious, natural surroundings, set in 80 acres. Visit the website at: www.chesterzoo.org.
