March was once an island surrounded by marshes, but as the land was drained the market town grew and prospered. March is on the River Nene which is part of a 200-mile Fenland Waterway system that winds through the town centre and is used to transport coal, corn and timber to Cambridge, Wisbech, King's Lynn, Peterborough, and St. Ives.
