March was once an island surrounded by marshes, but as the land was drained the market town grew and prospered. March is on the River Nene which is part of a 200-mile Fenland Waterway system that winds through the town centre and is used to transport coal, corn and timber to Cambridge, Wisbech, King's Lynn, Peterborough, and St. Ives.

Broad Street lives up to its name and is unusually wide. It is lined with many shops and has a beautiful fountain erected in 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V. St Wendreda's Church was named after the daughter of one of the first Christian kings in East Anglia.
