The name, Chatteris, derives from the Anglo-Saxon word Caeteric, which means wood by a river. Chatteris is one of four market towns in the Cambridgeshire district of the Fens and is where Boadicea fled after being defeated by the Romans. To the north of Chatteris runs a large river called Vermuyden's Drain, named after the Dutch engineer who undertook the drainage of the Fens in the mid 17th century.
