Cambridgeshire is a county of contrasts, with towns and cities steeped in history.
Living in Cambridgeshire
Cambridgeshire is a county of landscape contrasts, particularly between its north and south, which is divided by the University City of Cambridge.
Most often associated with Cambridgeshire is the city of Cambridge, an old English university town, where locals happily mix in a combination of 'town and gown' - academics and non academic people.
Cambridge and its surrounding villages have a strong residential housing market that has seen outstanding capital appreciation and a constant demand for quality accommodation.
In addition to Cambridge, other popular residential towns include Huntingdon, Peterborough, Wisbech, St. Ives, Ely and St. Neots.
Peterborough was reclassified a New Town in 1967 to accommodate London's overspill population. Modern Peterborough is a thriving cathedral city, which has been chosen as one of the UK's four 'Environment Cities', and is experiencing its fastest economic and population growth in decades.
If your preference is to live within a smaller community, the market town of Huntingdon is centrally situated in Cambridgeshire, and stands on the north bank of the River Great Ouse.
Huntingdon has excellent road and rail links, making it one of the most accessible towns in the country. There is varied selection of shops, including large new supermarkets and a mix of major high street multiples and independent stores. With a population of over 16,000, the bustling town of St. Ives is situated in the heart of Cambridgeshire. The town benefits from comprehensive shopping facilities, an excellent range of recreational facilities and regular train services in to London's King's Cross.
Transport
The Cambridgeshire region as a whole benefits from good transport links.
The main City of Cambridge is just 55 minutes from London by fast and regular trains, and from Peterborough there is a 50-minute rail link to King's Cross.
Cambridgeshire is home to Stansted Airport (London's third largest airport).
By road, the A1 (M) runs through the county, providing fast access to London from most of the main towns in Cambridgeshire.
History and culture
Cambridge is renowned for its scientific associations. Charles Darwin studied in Cambridge and Isaac Newton was an undergraduate at Trinity College. In the 1950s, DNA was discovered at the University's Cavendish Laboratory and announced in a pub that still exists.
Today, the student population is forecast to increase considerably. A rise in post-graduate numbers, alongside a huge expansion of buildings and student intake is set to ensure the city's continued growth.
Peterborough's name derived from its Norman Cathedral St. Peter. This ancient and prosperous city, which has preserved its ancient heritage today, incorporates modern shopping and leisure facilities.
