On the road from Winscombe to Weston-super-Mare, Banwell is a village in north Somerset that is steeped in history. To the east of the village is Banwell Wood, with a knoll that was an iron age fort where the ramparts can still be seen. Nearby is a Victorian castle built in 1847, which is now a Grade II listed restaurant and hotel, and to the west of the castle are the remains of Roman occupation. A glass bowl was found engraved with hunting scenes and the words ‘Vivas cum tvis pies’ i.e. Long life to you and yours, drink and you will live.High Street in Banwell is a narrow winding hill with cottages on each side. At the west end is Caves House, under which are stalactite caves. Further on is Hillend, once a factory for building aircraft during World War II but now a housing development known as Elborough Village. Many of the houses for sale in Banwell are new-build townhouses, often stylish, terraced properties with up to four bedrooms. There is also a good choice of detached houses, large, thatched cottages and converted farm buildings.
