Avon is a relatively new county created in 1974 from parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset; in 1995 the county was abolished and the towns and cities redistributed amongst Somerset and Gloucestershire. Avon covers an area of just over 500 square miles and is one of the smallest counties in the UK. Historical information
Historically a county in its own right, Bristol grew around the natural harbour on the river Avon and has a history that dates back to Anglo-Saxon times. In the 1800s Bristol turned to ship building, launching the "S. S. Great Britain" from its docks in 1843 - the first screw-propeller passenger ship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Bristol is world famous for the Clifton Suspension Bridge, also designed by Brunel.
Weston-super-Mare was originally a small fishing village and is now one of the principal seaside resorts on the West Coast. The name Weston is made up of two Old English or Saxon words meaning the west tun or settlement.
Bath is renowned as being the most complete and best preserved Georgian city in Britain, and is also one of Britain's oldest cities, famous since Roman times for its warm mineral springs. The origins are from the 1st century Roman Spa of Aquae Sulis ('Water of Sul'- a Celtic Goddess) - though legend attributes the discovery of the springs to Bladud, a Celtic prince who is thought to have lived about 860 BC.
