Redbridge is the epitome of leafy suburbia, supported by excellent local amenities and good road and rail transport links.
Living in Redbridge
Redbridge lies to the east of the A406 North Circular Road and south of Junction 4 of the M11. It has some of the leafiest streets and one of the greenest environments in London, and yet is only seven miles from the City.
The name, Redbridge, derives from a bridge, built in red brick, over the River Roding. It was a significant landmark at the time as most of the local bridges were built in stone.
The red bridge was demolished in 1921 but the quality of life in Redbridge was considered to be of such a high standard that the towns name was chosen in 1965 to represent the new London Borough of Redbridge.
Property in Redbridge is a mix of family-sized Victorian and Edwardian houses, between the wars semi-detached houses, and post-war developments of houses and apartment blocks.
Supporting the attractive residential streets are good local shops and, to the south of Redbridge, the Exchange shopping centre on the border with Ilford.
North-east of Redbridge is a 40-acre lake called Fairlop Waters which is perfect for all kinds of water sports, especially boating.
The borough also boasts a 14-acre lake for anglers, two country parks, several local golf courses, numerous greens, childrens play areas and wide-ranging sports amenities.
Redbridge is renowned for being especially popular with families and to accommodate them the borough has over fifty primary schools, thirteen comprehensive schools, two grammar schools and two foundation schools. There is also a good choice of independent schools.
Transport
Redbridge tube station is on the Chigwell loop of the Central Line, which provides a direct route to Stratford, Liverpool Street, Bank and Oxford Circus.
Stratford is served by the Docklands Light Railway, connecting to Canary Wharf, Lewisham, Bank, Beckton and London City Airport. In 2010 it will also connect to Canning Town.
Stratford mainline station is operated by National Express East Anglia trains, who provide a direct link to Chelmsford, Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich.
Stratford International Station is part of the Eurostar Channel Tunnel Rail Link and will open in 2009.

History and culture
Valentines Park lies in the heart of Redbridge off the A123 Cranbrook Road and at 125 acres it is one of the largest parks in the borough.
In 1899 the Municipal Borough of Ilford realised that unless an area of "relaxation and pleasure" was spared from housing development, all traces of the Essex countryside within Redbridge would be lost.
Since then, Valentines Park, which has a number of Grade II listed features, has undergone extensive renovation, financed by the Heritage Lottery Fund and by the London Borough of Redbridge.
