Homes in Knightsbridge have Harrods as their corner shop and Hyde Park for their back garden.

Living in Knightsbridge

Knightsbridge is renowned for its majestic mansion flats and for its grand terraces of white stucco houses, served by excellent shops and restaurants.

Named after a crossing over the River Westbourne, which is now one of London's many underground rivers, noble knights met Queen Matilda at the bridge in 1141 to discuss their grievances.

Today, Queen Matilda would have left the knights kicking their spurs while she spent a king’s ransom in the major department stores of Harrods and Harvey Nichols, or visited the designer shops that grace Sloane Street.

Knightsbridge has some of the finest new developments of luxury flats in London, complemented by Grade II-listed Regency houses in secluded squares. One of the prettiest locations is Trevor Square, just a short walk from Harrods Food Hall.

Due north of Knightsbridge is the vast green swathe of Hyde Park where you can feed the ducks paddling in the Serpentine and attend a concert in the summer.

To the east of Knightsbridge is Mayfair and London's West End and to the south, Sloane Square, home to the Royal Court Theatre and Peter Jones, the department store.

To the west of Knightsbridge are some of the world's most celebrated institutions including the Natural History Museum, Science Museum, Imperial College London, Victoria and Albert Museum, the Royal College of Music and the Royal College of Art.

Near the museums on the Brompton Road is the Brompton Oratory, a Victorian Roman Catholic Church based on classic Italianate designs.

Transport

Knightsbridge is steeped in black cabs plying their trade to laden shoppers and it is also well-served by several major bus routes.

Knightsbridge tube station is on the Piccadilly Line, which provides a direct link to the terminals at Heathrow Airport.

En route to Heathrow is South Kensington tube station which, apart from the Piccadilly Line, is served by the District and Circle lines with Sloane Square tube station one stop eastwards.

Victoria mainline railway station is south-east of Knightsbridge and provides a swift service to Gatwick Airport and Brighton.

History and culture

A short drive east along Piccadilly, or three stops on the Piccadilly Line from Knightsbridge tube station, is London's West End with its numerous museums, art galleries, theatres, cinemas, restaurants and clubs.

Due north of Knightsbridge, on Kensington Gore, is the Royal Albert Hall, famous for hosting the Promenade Concerts. For information regarding current and forthcoming concerts and shows please visit http://tickets.royalalberthall.com/season/performances.aspx

On the east side of Sloane Square in Chelsea is the delightful Royal Court Theatre with a wine bar and restaurant tunnelled under the pavement. For information regarding shows and tickets please visit http://www.royalcourttheatre.com/

The Chelsea Flower Show is held annually in the grounds of the Royal Hospital near Sloane Square. For information please visit http://www.rhs.org.uk/chelsea/index.html
