Batley lies north of Dewsbury in Kirklees Metropolitan Borough. It is a compact town with many beautiful buildings and is easily reached by road and rail. The Industrial Revolution came to Batley in 1796 with the arrival of the first water-powered mills and textiles grew to become as important as farming to the town. In the 1960s, the desperate need for cheap labour to work in Batley's textile industries attracted many migrant workers, mostly from Pakistan and India.
