2 houses for
restoration in a hilltop village in
Le Marche
These 2 very
attractive stone built houses are at the top of a delightful mediaeval borgo on
the east facing slope of the hills above Calderola in the central area of Le
Marche. From
the village there are excellent views across rolling countryside towards the
Adriatic. The borgo was historically a
fortified village, and the main castle has been restored by the local
Comune. Private owners have already
restored many of the smaller houses which make up the rest of the village, and
the Comune has been careful to ensure that all the work carried out respects the
architectural traditions of this area. The parish church has frescoes by the
renaissance painter De Magistris.
The larger of
the houses, which has a useable area of about 200 square metres, is still
structurally in one piece and on 3 floors. At ground level are the wine cellar
and stable, both with very attractive stonework and capable of being integrated
with the living accommodation. The layout of the rooms on the 1st and 2nd floors could be modified as
part of a restoration project to provide 4 bedrooms as well as a kitchen and
dining area.
The smaller
house is about 20
metres away and needs total re-building and will provide
an attractive family home with 2 to 3 bedrooms around a small
courtyard.
Grounds and
services
A footpath right
of way passes between the 2 houses and leads to a small shrine dedicated to Our
Lady. Each house stands on its own small plot of land with ample space for
eating outdoors. Mains water, electricity and drainage are all available. The village has a
small but excellent restaurant as well a recently-inaugurated folk museum, both
signs of a lively local community. Shops and all other amenities are to be found
in Calderola which is about 5 minutes drive away. Ancona airport can be reached in about 1 hour.
