A
family home in a tower in a small hamlet near the Lago d’Iseo.
This large stone building dates back
at least to the 12th century when it belonged to the Celeri di Corti family, who owed feudal allegiance to the Dukes of Milan, the Viscontis. It forms part of a borgo or fortified village, in a dominating position above the northern end
of beautiful Lago d’Iseo, in the province of Bergamo. The Celeris fought for the Emperor and their Duke against the Guelphs and in the 17th century the property came into the hands of the Agliardi family, who have remained the owners until the present day.
The main structure with its massive stone walls is sound but there is scope for some interior refurbishment. The property is entered through a wrought iron gate and a stone staircase leads up to an arched portico. The massive wooden front door opens onto another
staircase going up to the 1st floor, passing a cloakroom. Straight ahead is an impressive vaulted
living room, 14 m long. To the right of the landing a corridor leads to the large family kitchen and a study, and also gives access to the 2 courtyard gardens. On the 2nd floor above is a large landing with attractive arched windows, the large
master bedroom with en suite, 2 double bedrooms, 1 with adjoining dressing room, and a bathroom. The loft area on the 3rd floor is accessed by a pull-down stair, and incorporates a charming
loggia (in need of paving and decorating) with attractive views over the roofs of the borgo to the surrounding mountains. Just above the front entrance gate a separate doorway leads into a private bar and wine cellar. In addition to the visible amenities,
family legend has it that an underground passage leads from the house to the neighbouring church !
Grounds, outbuildings and services.
Outside the kitchen is a tiny courtyard with scope for laying out a culinary herb garden. In the angle between the L-shaped walls of the main house is a grassed
over courtyard facing south-west , with plenty of space for al fresco dining and sunbathing . A small outbuilding provides storage for garden tools and furniture, and in front of the house a one-time hay barn provides a secure one-car
garage. There is mains water, gas and drainage. Bergamo airport is about 1 hour’s drive away. Winter skiing is just a few kilometres away and a boat can be kept on the lake. The Adamello group is within easy reach for serious mountaineers.
