Your bedroom is a very personal space - your own private retreat from the world - so choose furnishings and furniture to make the time you spend in it as comfortable and calming as possible.
Planning your space
Space for fitted storage, en suite bathrooms and dressing areas are sought after in many homes and can increase the value of the property. Whatever your requirements the shape and size of your bedroom will dictate the proportions of the furniture and fittings you can have.
Decide if minor alterations could improve your options e.g. alcoves or recesses where wardrobes could be installed against the wall; a wall bed which can be stored against the wall when not in use could free up space for a desk; or the ceiling may be high enough to create a raised platform for the bed, giving space for storage or an ensuite shower room beneath.
The bed
The bed is the most important element in the bedroom, its style dictating the whole feel of the room - whether modern or traditional. Comfort and support are just as essential as style and shape as the quality of the bed will affect how well you sleep. So opt for the best bed you can afford.
Clothes storage
Once the bed is installed decisions on other furniture can be based around it, depending on how much space there is. Integrated storage systems make good use of space and can be installed to your own requirements, though can be expensive. A well designed freestanding wardrobe can be a striking focal point and can go with you when you move, though they are often not as big as fitted.
Bedside storage
When choosing bedside storage, think about the items you use regularly and need nearby, and whether you want them on show. When space is limited go for folding or mobile options.
Lighting
Wall lights or table lamps that can cast a warm pool of light next to your bed can create an intimate atmosphere, as well as good task lighting for reading.
Fabrics
Fabrics provide the softness and texture essential for the comfort factor in a bedroom - whether bedlinen, curtains, cushions, rugs or even a fitted carpet - the more you have the more luxurious it will be.
